When Paul Rossilli learned that his character, David, on General Hospital stalks Laura Spencer, and is semi-involved in her disappearance, several thoughts rushed through his mind. The main one was "I hope people don't hold it against me." But after gazing at this handsome man, it's safe to assure viewers will soon fall under his spell.
Paul, who has an illustrious stage background, admits “I had no idea of the popularity of this show. It’s a very different world from the theater.
The impact is so extraordinary on national television. Just the other day I went shopping on Rodeo Drive and people came up to me and said “I saw you stalking Laura.” It’s incredible.”
How is Paul finding his first soap opera experience?
“It’s really interesting. I don’t have any idea who I am and it’s different, sort of like being on an adventure. In the theater, it’s all laid out in front of you. You know the character you are playing each night. But everyone’s been very nice on the show, especially Gloria Monty,” confides Paul.
Paul’s first acting experience was at 17 in the film Midnight Cowboy. Roles in repertory companies and regional theater soon followed. Paul worked with former daytime Christopher Walken (Mike Bauer, Guiding Light) in Seattle in Hamlet. He’s also performed in many classical theater productions, but comedy is his favorite.
“In the comical film Serial (with Martin Mull) I played an Argentinian dog clipper. A friend of mine had an Argentinian house boy, so I talked with him for a few hours, listened to his voice, and used his accent,” recalls Paul.
After earning stage credits across the country, Paul heard about the role on GH. He tested with Loanne Bishop (Rose) and won the part. “I took a while to decide whether to take this step. Mainly my background is in the theater and I wasn’t even sure I wanted to get into television,” reveals Paul. One thing is for sure, his new fans are positive he made the right decision.
